Asia Pacific Symposium on Cultures-Based Innovation & Design
Old ways of knowing | Irreversible positive changes
4th-10th August 2013 @ Whakatane, North Island New Zealand:
Cultures-Based Innovation is the use of tangible and intangible cultural heritage to drive irreversable changes in peoples' attitudes, behaviors, and/or values that directly benefit communities under social and environmental distress.
This area is well embedded in design anthropology and technology methods. This area of design represents a new area of skills to explore for advanaced design and technology teachers and students. The techniques we use stretch and enhance D&T educator's practical and conceptual skills in product, system and service design projects. Service design is part of the new content emerging globally in D&T curriculum.

A cooler planet by design

From hot property to unwanted waste: it's time to rethink the way we design, produce and reuse new products.
Many of us get frustrated with the slow pace of international action on climate change. But powerless as we feel, we can still make a difference by rethinking the way we design our lives.
Design is rarely considered when talking about climate change, yet is a significant factor in the economic activities and political decisions that are driving emissions higher.
The World Bank's Turn Down the Heat report warns of the consequences of global temperatures rising by an average of four degrees Celcius by the end of this century.
Let us be clear about one thing - the prospect of a four-degree rise is a conservative prediction.
Many equally reasonable scientists believe it is likely we will face more dangerous changes than that, sooner than we think.
This is where designers and their employers, as well as consumers, have to share responsibility for dealing with climate change.

Design Means - Talk at Goldsmiths College
Understanding the ‘lores’ of the made world through cross-cultural insight
By Kurt Seemann
Invited Guest speaker to the Design Means talks at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
Monday 23rd April 2012, 5pm to 6pm.
This talk explores how we understand technological ways of knowing for world educational futures. It draws on 25 years of cross-cultural technacy research and concludes with a new, more holistic and systemic scholarly frame that sees the world as connected. Could it be time to learn the ‘lores’ of the made world, and seek the insights from old living cultures skilled in practical holism linking people, technology and earth into one contiguous narrative?
